ABOUT THE PROJECT

Protest event analysis in Latin America (PEALA) brings together emerging scholars and senior researchers in the fields of social movements and contentious politics in both the Global North and South. PEALA is the product of a unique international collaboration of 16 scholars from 9 different countries with academic gatherings hosted by the University of Tokyo (2018) and Tulane University (2020), as well as workshop meetings at the Latin American Studies Association in Lima, Peru (2017), Barcelona, Spain (2018), Boston, USA (2019), and a virtual congress (2021).

These researchers have systematically compiled and quantified large amounts of information on political protests using a variety of domestic news sources over the years. They apply the protest event analysis method to examine the occurrence and features of protests, associating them with other events, structures and/or developments in the region.
